Milling may be the complete process or one step in a broader route that includes turning, secondary machining, or surface finishing.

The right process depends on geometry rather than the product name. A mostly round part may be better suited to turning, while a part with flat faces, pockets, off-axis holes, or multiple mounting features usually needs milling. Complex faces can require additional setups or multi-axis access. During review, we look at how the part can be held, which features are reachable, and which dimensions must remain related after the part is repositioned.

Capabilities are matched to the drawing, not a generic machine list

A useful capability review answers whether the proposed process can hold the required relationships on your actual part. We assess milling direction, setup count, workholding surfaces, cutter reach, edge conditions, and inspection access before confirming a route. This avoids implying that one machine specification guarantees every tolerance on every geometry.

  • Face and profile milling: flat surfaces, outside profiles, shoulders, steps, and mating faces.
  • Pockets and cavities: open pockets, recessed areas, internal islands, and floor features where a cutter can enter safely.
  • Hole features: drilled, bored, reamed, countersunk, counterbored, and tapped holes when specified on the drawing.
  • Multi-side machining: features distributed across several faces, with setup planning based on datum relationships.
  • Prototype and repeat orders: one-off design checks, small batches, and production quantities subject to project review.
  • Secondary operations: compatible finishing or complementary machining can be considered as part of the quoted route.

Please identify cosmetic faces, sealing surfaces, bearing seats, thread standards, and features that must be produced in the same setup. Those notes affect process planning more than a general request for “high precision.”

Material selection affects cutting forces, tool wear, burr formation, heat, part movement, surface appearance, and cost. Do not submit only a trade color or generic label such as “aircraft aluminum” or “engineering plastic.” State the recognized material designation used by your drawing and, where applicable, the required temper or grade. If substitution is acceptable, say so explicitly and require approval before production.

How tolerances are reviewed and quoted

Achievable tolerance is feature-specific. It changes with material, overall size, wall thickness, feature depth, setup count, datum scheme, thermal stability, and inspection method. For that reason, we do not apply one unsupported tolerance number to every milled part. The quote and manufacturing review should confirm the requirements that apply to your drawing.

Use tighter limits only where function requires them. If a bore mates with a shaft, a face seals against a gasket, or two holes locate an assembly, mark that relationship clearly. If a dimension is cosmetic or clearance-only, a practical tolerance can reduce unnecessary machining and inspection effort.

DFM review before metal or plastic is cut

DFM for milling should expose cost and quality risks while changes are still inexpensive. We review the RFQ package for features that drive extra setups, long-reach tooling, fragile walls, difficult deburring, or ambiguous inspection. Any proposed change should be returned for approval; the manufacturing drawing remains the controlling requirement.

  • Internal corners: allow a practical radius because rotating cutters cannot create a truly sharp internal corner.
  • Deep narrow pockets: increase tool reach and vibration risk; widen the pocket, add corner relief, or reduce depth where function permits.
  • Thin walls and large flat areas: may move during cutting or after unclamping; consider ribs, balanced stock removal, or a more stable geometry.
  • Small deep holes: can require specialized tools and careful chip evacuation; confirm whether the depth is functional.
  • Threads near edges: need enough surrounding material and clear thread callouts, including system, size, pitch, class, and depth.
  • Multiple tight relationships across faces: may require a deliberate datum and setup plan; show which relationship controls assembly.
  • Cosmetic surfaces: identify visible faces and define acceptable tool marks, handling marks, color variation, and edge breaks.

Quality planning and inspection workflow

Quality control begins with document review, not the final inspection bench. A useful workflow connects the approved drawing to material, process, in-process checks, final verification, and shipment records. The inspection plan should focus effort on features that affect fit, sealing, alignment, motion, safety, or downstream assembly.

  1. RFQ review: compare the 3D model, 2D drawing, revision, material, quantity, finish, and inspection requests.
  2. Manufacturing review: identify datums, critical features, setup risks, deburring needs, and any questions requiring buyer approval.
  3. Incoming material control: confirm the ordered material designation against purchasing and project requirements.
  4. First-part and in-process checks: verify setup-dependent and critical dimensions early enough to correct the process.
  5. Final inspection: check the agreed characteristics with suitable calibrated measurement methods and record results when documentation is included in the order.
  6. Cleaning, protection, and packing: protect threads, finished faces, sharp functional edges, and cosmetic surfaces according to the part and shipping method.

If you need a dimensional report, material documentation, first-article format, or a specific sampling approach, include it with the RFQ. Documentation scope can affect both price and schedule, so it should not be added after machining is complete.
